Please be aware that small grain producers in the irrigation areas should be aware of potential high populations of false armyworm Leucania loreyi in the coming month

Monitoring data from Hartswater and Luckhoff indicate the following:

Hartswater: A dry period between the end of April and the middle of September (weeks 17-38) may have caused moths to lay their eggs inside the pivots, instead of in grass in the surrounding area. Although moth numbers were not particularly high, producers should scout regularly to enable timeous corrective measure should larvae occur.

Luckhoff: Very dry conditions have prevailed throughout the year. It is likely that L. loreyi moths laid their eggs inside the pivots where moisture and grass hosts (including crops and weeds) were present. Moth numbers were high during May. As a result, large moth flights may be expected during the end of October to the beginning of November (weeks 42-44). Producers must scout regularly from the middle of October to enable timeous corrective measure should larvae occur.
