Although we refer to African Arachnida, we use the name in a restricted sense and synonymous with the Afrotropical Region, a zoogeographical region that includes:

  • Africa south of the Sahara

  • Islands off the East Coast of Africa (Madagascar, the Mascarenes, the Comoros, the Seychelles and adjacent small islands Aldabra, Mauritius and Réunion (Zanzibar part of Tanzania)

  • Islands on the east coast namely St Helena, Ascension, Cape Verde, Sâo Tomé, Principe and Annobon (Bioko part of Equatorial Guinea)

  • The southern part of the Arabian Peninsula (Yemen) including the island Socotra
