Larger FAW caterpillars (L3-L5 instar) may contain characteristic marks and spots that aid identification in the field, including the inverted 'Y' mark on the head region and the four larger spots on the second last body segment.

The most common lines and spots on late instar FAW larvae are indicated above. Note: variations from the illustrations above may be encountered, and other non-related caterpillars may show similar marks and spots, although usually not as vividly as in the FAW.
