Biotechnology is the application of technology to make or
modify products or processes for specific use. The biotechnologists complement
the breeders’ and horticulturists’ activities by applying in vitro or molecular
techniques to plant improvement, e.g. to germinate aborted fruit embryos from
controlled crosses, to propagate recalcitrant rootstocks, to unravel
