The Integrated Registration and Genetic Information System (INTERGIS) is South Africa's national livestock recording and genetic information platform. Managed by the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) on behalf of the Department of Agriculture, INTERGIS supports the recording, validation, management and reporting of pedigree, production, performance and genetic information across multiple livestock industries. INTERGIS is approved by the International Committee for Animal Recording (ICAR), forms the backbone of South Africa's animal production industry through its impartial and unbiased management of national livestock information, and operates in compliance with the Animal Improvement Act, 1998 (Act No. 62 of 1998).

Following a comprehensive modernisation programme completed in 2026, INTERGIS now provides a modern, secure and scalable web-based platform designed to improve accessibility, efficiency and long-term sustainability while maintaining the integrity of the National Animal Database.

OBJECTIVE:

INTERGIS enables livestock breeders, breed societies, recording organisations, researchers and industry stakeholders to securely capture, validate, manage and access animal pedigree, production and performance information through the National Animal Database. The system supports genetic improvement, regulatory compliance and informed decision-making across South Africa's livestock industries.

Building on the trusted foundation of the legacy INTERGIS, the modernised platform delivers a secure, cloud-based national livestock information system with enhanced performance, improved usability and expanded digital capabilities. The platform supports livestock registration, performance recording, genomic information management, and industry-wide collaboration through an integrated ecosystem that connects breeders, breed societies, researchers, government, and other stakeholders.
