The Beef Genomics Program (BGP) is a pioneering collaboration between industry, higher education institutes, and science councils aimed at enhancing the global competitiveness of Southern African beef cattle through cutting-edge genomic technologies. By improving genetic traits such as growth rate, feed efficiency, meat quality, and resilience to harsh conditions, BGP drives sustainable beef production while transforming the sector by integrating smallholder and emerging farmers into the formal beef value chain.
KEY OBJECTIVES________________________________
Accelerate Genetic Improvement: Develop Genomic Estimated Breeding Values (GEBVs) for faster, more accurate selection of superior cattle traits.
Inclusivity and Transformation: Empower smallholder farmers through the Kaonafatso Ya Dikgomo (KyD) program, ensuring access to genomic tools and market opportunities.
Capacity Building: Train researchers, students, and farmers to sustain genomic advancements and foster industry-wide adoption.
