EXCELLENCE AWARDS

The ARC values its employees for their contributions and recognises employees' crucial involvement in making a difference which in turn enables the ARC to succeed in making a difference in the South African economy. The purpose of the Excellence Awards is to

  • Identify the employees who have made a difference through performance and excellence; and

  • Recognise and revere the identified employees formally and informally so that they can repeat making a difference through performance and excellence which in turn enables the ARC to make a difference in South Africa thus ensuring a sustainable success for all. ​

CATEGORIES​

​​​ADMINISTRATIVE EXCELLENCE​

​​​Exceptional initiative or leadership in carrying out activities to improve ARC programme operations or to benefit the ARC environment. 

Development and improvement of methods, procedures, or equipment that have resulted in substantial benefits to the ARC.

Unusual competence, compassion, or heroism in an emergency within ARC.

Sustained and excellent performance in carrying out a difficult task.

Outstanding contribution to a special committee or task force dealing with ARC-wide policies, procedures, or operations.

Notable competence and resourcefulness in improving the administrative management of the ARC.

Skill and leadership in administration

CAREER RECOGNITION

Sustained significant contributions over a period of at least 5 years in the ARC.

Outstanding quality of research outputs in a coherent broad field, on demonstrated leadership within the field, and on the impacts on scientific or industrial development in South Africa.

Minimum standards for this award are:

  • A substantial track record in research and/or technological innovation, and the motivation supported by a full list of the products. Only products that have been subjected to credible, external peer-review are considered (for example papers in peer-reviewed journals will be considered, but unpublished client reports will not). Where applicable, the existence of the products are verified.

  • Sufficient evidence of leadership in the field – either in research or in its implementation. Evidence of leadership can be gauged by a leading role in large teams, co-authorship of publications, the existence of networks, leading roles in professional bodies, editing of significant works and so on. Evidence of supporting implementation of research can be demonstrated by the impact of the candidate's efforts on the development of significant government policies, or the improvement of efficiencies in the private sector.

​MANAGEMENT EXCELLENCE

​This is an award to a staff member with clear management responsibilities, for excellence in management. The award is justified by accomplishing or exceeding a set of criteria, which encompass financial performance, technical achievements, Human Capital Management capabilities, and transformative efforts.​

Minimum standards for the award are:

  • A clear description of an appropriate set of management targets, commensurate with the candidate's job level.

  • A clear description of the management interventions that led to above-average achievement; and

  • Documented evidence of targets set, and levels of achievement realized.

OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION BY AN INDIVIDUAL​This is an award for an acclaimed piece of work by an individual on the basis of an identifiable product or products that demonstrate world-class knowledge generation, technical excellence, or innovation in research and development.​
​TECHNICAL SUPPORT EXCELLENCE

​This is an award to an individual or team for support excellence. The award must be motivated on the basis of sustained, high-quality support over one or more years, leading to improvements in efficiency and/or promoting the positive image of the ARC to stakeholders.

Minimum standards for this award are:

  • A clear description of the support on which the improvements are based will be necessary. The improvements should be quantified, and not subjective.

  • A clear demonstration of the linkage between the work done and the observed improvements. ​

​YOUNG RESEARCHER

​This is an award for a contribution, well above expectations, by a researcher younger than 35 years. The award must be motivated on the basis of a product or products that demonstrate independent thought, innovation and leadership.

Minimum standards for this award are:

  • The recipient should be younger than 35 at the end of the year in which the work was performed.

  • An identifiable product or products that have been subjected to credible, external peer-review. Where applicable, the existence of the products should be verified.

  • A clear motivation that demonstrates the independent role of the candidate in producing the work.​

OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION BY A TEAM

This is an award for an acclaimed piece of work by a team. The award must be motivated on the basis of an identifiable product or products that demonstrate world-class knowledge generation, technical excellence, or innovation in research and development.

​Minimum standards for this award are:

  • An identifiable product or group of related products that have been subjected to credible, external peer-review. Where applicable, the existence of the products should be verified.

  • There should be clear evidence of acclaim for the work, either through publication in a highly prestigious journal or journals (impact score > 2), some form of external recognition for the work, or significant client praise for work done.

​The CEO’s Award recognises extraordinary effort and contribution of either an individual or a team to the fulfilment of the ARC mandate​.
