  • Women in a man’s world - who said that women cannot be as professional in a man’s world as the man himself? ARC-ILI is very proud of its professional women, working side by side with men as a qualified corps, sometimes under difficult circumstances, in the field.   • Thabina is a rural farming community, situated about 30 km south-east of Tzaneen, in the tranquil rural area at the foot of the Rita Mountain.
     
  • Co-operation between the ARC-ILI (ARC-Institute for Agricultural Engineering) and the German Development Organisation, GTZ, leads to the promotion of small-scale farming practices such as soil and moisture conservation, seed reproduction, applicable mechanisation systems and related practices. Research in the Limpopo Province is entering its third season this year.
     
  • Felix Reinders completed his BSc Engineering (Civil) degree at the University of Pretoria and is registered as Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa. Since he joined ARC-ILI in 1979, he was involved with irrigation, especially the research, development and testing of irrigation equipment.
     
  • The Mount Ayliff Farmers Support Centre in Kokstad recently bought ARC-ILI products, such as the ripper planter, the small-scale chemical sprayer and the maize crusher.
     
  • For successful beef producing, certain facilities are necessary. These facilities must simplify the management of the system and limit labour to the minimum. It must be functional and economical and a safe environment for the animals, as well as a safe working environment for the handlers. The ARC-Institute for Agricultural Engineering has compiled a manual that will be of great value to the beef producer. Some aspects of the handling facilities as such are discussed in this article.
