We advocate multidisciplinary cooperation among biotechnologists, plant breeders, pathologists, entomologists and other plant scientists to increase the production of high-quality fruit.

Breeding of new unique deciduous fruit cultivars and rootstocks are our primarily objective.

We execute fundamental, strategic and applied research on grapevine and deciduous fruit diseases and pests.

To provide both commercial and developing sectors of the South African pome, stone and other fruit industries with practical and innovative technology, in harmony with the environment, thereby ensuring their competitive advantage.

We specialise in integrated management of post-harvest quality of perishables, processing and process optimisation of agricultural products deciduous fruit and indigenous herbal teas and exploitation of indigenous plants for health benefits.  This division also embraces wine and brandy technology, wine microbiology and grape and wine chemistry, as well as research on the authentication of wine and brandy.

We execute practicable research in an innovative, dynamic and cost-effective manner and with active extension of this knowledge satisfy all the soil science needs of the grape-vine and deciduous fruit industry, thus helping to ensure prosperity whilst taking the environment into consideration.

We are committed to establish practical, environment friendly and economically justifiable cultivation practices that enable all South African farmers to produce grapes and grape products of acceptable quality.
