The biotechnologists complement the breeders’ and horticulturists’ activities by applying in vitro or molecular techniques to plant improvement, e.g. to germinate aborted fruit embryos from controlled crosses, to propagate recalcitrant rootstocks, to unravel host-pathogen interactions and to genotype plant material.
