ARC-Infruitec/Nietvoorbij is a member of the Horticulture Business Division of the Agricultural Research Council (ARC). The Institute is located in Stellenbosch in the Western Cape, with several research farms and wineries in the region.
The ARC-Infruitec/Nietvoorbij mandate is to conduct research, development and technology transfer on the breeding, cultivation and post-harvest technology of deciduous fruit, viticulture, alternative crops (eg berries and olives) and indigenous herbal teas.
Post-harvest activities include wine and brandy production, cold storage and other forms of shelf-life extension (drying, canning, juicing and jam). These activities are aimed at commercial farmers and resource-poor farmers as well as communities. Increasing attention is focused on stabilising food security and turning waste into value-added product.
ARC-Infruitec/Nietvoorbij is building on previous successes obtained by Infruitec and Nietvoorbij, such as:
- the proud record of new fruit and table grape cultivars released as a result of the local breeding programmes
- excellent soil and water management practices, and
- integrated production for environment-friendly pest and disease management
The Institute maintains excellent partnerships with its relevant industries to ensure the future of the South African fruit, vine and wine industries. The Institute comprises seven divisions, each specialising in different aspects of fruit and wine production. The institute also boasts a Sterile Insect Technique Programme. |
