Dairy technology



This Section of the ARC-API provides the Dairy Industry with technological services and professional advice regarding dairy products e.g. cheese, yoghurt, ice cream and butter. Pilot plant facilities are also available for product development and advice regarding factory lay-out and planning can be given.

The facilities include a well-equipped experimental factory that is available for:

  • Technological research and development in the Department of Animal Products and Food Security

  • Research planned by other centres of the ARC-Irene

  • The food industry for ad hoc trials or formal contract research.

The facility of the Dairy Industry includes a well-equipped experimental factory. The experimental factory consists of well equipped yoghurt, cheese,  fresh milk and ultrafiltration pilot plants. The research are concerned with:

  • The generation and expansion of basic and fundamental knowledge related to the positive role of all aspects of dairy science

  • The application of scientific knowledge within the primary and secondary dairy industries, to the benefit of the industry and the consumer of milk and milk products

  • To maximise the utilisation of milk solids and to exploit the positive properties of milk
