Breeding and Genetics

Traditionally the breeding and genetics team maintain the crop genebanks which are the plant breeder’s raw material and make appropriate crosses and apply selection techniques – in the glasshouse, field or fruit laboratory – to combine the natural variation into commercially useful new combinations. Increasingly, breeders are using genetic analysis and molecular tools to increase understanding of the variation and to aid the selection process.
