ARC-IAE

 Food processing/Voedselverwerking

  • The Institute for Agricultural Engineering (ARC-ILI) has recently developed and built a Maize Crusher, which functions as a low-cost ‘crusher’ to be used by small-scale farmers, in order to produce power fodder for cattle, as well as coarse maize-meal. It is operated manually and is easy enough to be used by women and children.

  • A peanut butter processing project was initiated in August 2001at Mathibestadt by Ms Mmathaha Mosala, a Chief Researcher at the ARC-Institute for Agricultural Engineering (ARC-ILI). Mathibestadt is situated in the North-West province.

  • Mangoes are a sought-after fruit and very popular during the warm summer months. For the rest of the year a fresh mango is a scarce item, but can still be enjoyed as a processed product.

  • The production of vegetable oils from oil seeds is a very good example of value-adding to a product. Oil is used for nutritional purposes and can be pressed from a great variety of seeds, of which sunflower seed, peanuts (groundnuts) and sesame seed are probably the best known.

  • When adding value to a product, mainly three things will influence the process. These are the product, the equipment and the process method.
