This Section of the ARC-API provides the Dairy Industry with technological services and professional advice regarding dairy products e.g. cheese, yoghurt, ice cream and butter. Pilot plant facilities are also available for product development and advice regarding factory lay-out and planning can be given.

The facilities include a well-equipped experimental factory that is available for:

  • Technological research and development in the Department of Animal Products and Food Security
  • Research planned by other centres of the ARC-Irene
  • The food industry for ad hoc trials or formal contract research

The facility of the Dairy Industry includes a well-equipped experimental factory. The experimental factory consists of well equipped for the processing of yoghurt, cheese, fresh milk and other milk products.

The analytical laboratory provides an outstanding analytical service to the food and feed industry on a broad technical basis by means of product analysis.  The laboratory is accredited by the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) to the international criteria defined in ISO/IEC 17025:2005. 

The service includes a complete spectrum of feed and food products tests, chemical tests, microbiological and physical tests.  This includes amino acids, fatty acids fat-soluble vitamins, water-soluble vitamins, gross energy, dietary fibre, carbohydrates, crude fibre, proximate analyses, phosphatase activity, Salmonella spp, coli forms, total bacterial count, solubility index etc.

ARC ELSENBURG ANALYTICAL SERVICES

The laboratory is situated in Elsenburg and delivers a unique and important service to the farmers in the Western Cape as well as the dairy industry. The laboratory is accredited by the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) to the international criteria defined in ISO/IEC 17025:2005. The laboratory is equipped with Infrared analytical instrumentation, which is capable of determining fat, protein, lactose, urea and somatic cell counts in milk from cows, goats, sheep and buffalos.

The microbiology laboratory performs a spectrum of analyses, which includes: phosphatase activity, Salmonella spp, coli forms, total bacterial count, yeast and moulds etc.
